Poor Things, by Alasdair Gray; Uncorrected Signed Book Proof, 1992 Proof copy.
Poor Things; Episodes From the Early Life of Archibald McCandless M.D., Scottish Public Health Officer. By Alasdair Gray, although his own credit reads 'edited by Alasdair Gray' in line with the narrative style of the book. Uncorrected Signed Book Proof by Alasdair Gray.
A very scarce edition of this book, which has now been developed into a major movie, released in December 2023 to major award-winning acclaim (winner of 4 Oscars in 2024), with an impressive cast including Emma Stone, Mark Ruffalo and William Dafoe. It was based on this wonderful book by one of Scotland's great writers, Alasdair Gray, who passed away on 29 December 2019.
Published by Bloomsbury, London 1992, this being a pre-publication uncorrected proof, signed by the author. As such, it has a unique cover, and blank and doodled pages are used as placemarkers for the illustrations which would be used in the final published version. Contents page is still unnumbered at this stage.
As an uncorrected proof, only a very small quantity of about 20-30 copies would be likely to have been produced at the time. Of those not all would have survived and very few would be expected to be signed by the author.
