A handsome uniformly bound group of four novels by Charles Kingsley (1819-1875), one of the prominent novelists, clergymen and social commentators of the Victorian period. The set brings together several of his most important works: Alton Locke, his socially engaged novel of a working-class tailor and poet; Yeast, addressing the social and religious tensions of mid-Victorian England; Hypatia, his celebrated historical novel set amid the religious conflicts of fifth-century Alexandria; and Two Years Ago, combining contemporary social concerns with romance and adventure. Published by Macmillan between 1895 and 1897, the four volumes form a particularly attractive library set in uniform half leather with marbled boards and endpapers. Comprising:

Two Years Ago, 1895;

Alton Locke, Tailor and Poet, An Autobiography, 1896;

Hypatia, or New Foes with an Old Face, 1896; and;

Yeast, A Problem, 1897.

All published by Macmillan and Co. Limited., London and The Macmillan Company, New York, 1895-1897.

A very good set of 4 hardback volumes, each with dark olive grained leather spine and corners (sunned to brown on spines). The spines with raised bands and tooled gilt floral design and titles. Boards with green marbled paper with gilt metallic veins, matched to endpapers. Covers with light wear and some rubbing to spines. Some cracking to endpapers at front inner hinges, but all soundly bound.

Text pages are generally bright and clean with mild age-toning to extremities. All volumes with shiny gilt top edges.

Text in English.
