Each song is presented with its musical notation and lyrics surrounded by bold colour illustrations in the distinctive style of late nineteenth-century French popular printing. The imagery ranges from charming scenes of childhood and domestic life to the more robust, sometimes surprisingly macabre humour characteristic of traditional nursery songs and popular imagery of the period.
