Sir Walter Scott, The Waverley Novels Centenary Edition set, with The Life of Scott & Tales of a Grandfather, 29 Vols in Vintage Leather Suitcase. 1871-72.
Sir Walter Scott, The Waverley Novels (25 volumes) Centenary Edition set, with The Life of Scott (2 Volumes) & Tales of a Grandfather (2 Volumes); 29 Volumes in Vintage Leather Suitcase. We found this set in this vintage suitcase, so decided we would offer them with it - it's also a good fit for the set size and will offer excellent postage protection.
The Waverley Novels are published by Adam and Charles Black, Edinburgh, 1871, one hundred years after the birth of Scott. The 2 volumes of The Life of Scott, by J.G. Lockhart, with Prefatory letter by J.R. Hope Scott are published in 1872, and the final two volumes of The Tales of a Grannfather; Being The History of Scotland from the Earliest Period to the Close of the Rebellion 1745-46 are published in 1872. Printed in Edinburgh.
Each volume features an engraved, tissue guarded frontispiece and title page also featuring a fine engraving.
This is a good set - each volume has burgundy cloth covers with embossed cover design and gilt titles to spine. Covers are generally bumped and shelf worn, some with markings. Spines are faded to varying degrees. Head and tails of spine are worn.
Text blocks are all bound. Some give in the spines. Endpapers are mostly intact. Top edge is dust toned and some spotting to text block edges. Text is generally clean and bright with some age spotting at edges, extremities and around plates.
An imperfect set, but very legible and usable, as well as an interesting decorative piece with suitcase.
Text in English.
Weight: approximately 22kg (the suitcase plus all the books). Unpacked weight.
The Suitcase: approximately 67cm long x 38cm wide x 24cm high.
Each volume approximately 201mm tall x 136mm wide x 28mm deep.
