Sixty Five Plates of Shipping and Craft, E.W. Cooke, 1829

£400.00
SKU LAN7600

Sixty Five Plates of Shipping and Craft, Drawn and Etched by E.W. Cooke.

Published in London, 1829. Privately printed. Although dated to 1829, we believe this was actually issued in 1931, combining his original 50 engravings, with an additional 15 additional plates, although keeping the original title page.

A brown cloth hardback with embossed decoration to front and gilt to spine. Cover is shelf worn, rubbed and marked and ragged to head and tail of spine.

Provenance: with the bookplate of highly regarded English artist, E. Sherard Kennedy (1837-1900), to first pastedown. Other owner's initials in pencil to first free endpaper. Small London bookseller's sticker to first pastedown.

Condition is only fair overall, the text block is split open around the middle of the book with the spine exposed. All the pages are present, with one blank disbound. Cracked endpapers.

All sixty five plates are present as called for. The only text is the title page, the picture captions, and the list of plates at the rear (over 2 pages - a list of the first 50 Plates then a separate list of the Additional 15). The book features 65 high quality engravings of nautical scenes, protected by blank pages. Pages have some age toning and some foxing to edges, but the plates are still in good condition throughout.

A far from perfect book, but a terrific series of engravings from this uncommon title.

Text in English.

Dimensions: Approximately 313mm high x 251mm wide x 32mm high.

Weight: Approximately 1.8kg (unpacked).
