The Book of Delightful and Strange Designs - Japanese Stencils, by Andrew Tuer.

RECENTLY SOLD

The Book of Delightful and Strange Designs; being one hundred facsimile illustrations of the art of the Japanese stencil-cutter, to which the gentle reader is introduced by one Andrew W. Tuer, F.S.A., who knows nothing at all about it.

A very lengthy title and a wonderful and very scarce book by Andrew White Tuer (1838-1900). 1st edition, limited edition with a genuine Japanese stencil plate as frontispiece.

Published in 1893 by;

London: Leadenhall Press; Liberty & Co, (London, Paris and Yokohama); Simpkin, Marshall, Hamilton, Kent & Co;

New York: Charles Scribner's Sons;

Paris: Baudry

Leipzig: F A Brockhaus.

Harback with linen spine and labels to spine and front. Cover rather shelf worn with various stains and scuffs. Professionally rebound into its original cover at some stage as end papers are modern. Firmly bound, and text is actually very good, although age browned around the edges as would be expected with this paper. The stencil designs plates are excellent, and the wonderful intricate Japanese stencil frontispiece is in terrific condition - eack book would have had a different stencil and can easily be badly damaged or missing.

This was a limited edition, although the number of copies is not explicity noted - we believe there were about 350 copies. A very uncommon publication. Text is in English, German and French. 24pp + 27pp + 26pp +104 numbered illustrations over 57 double page plates.

Approximate dimensions 185mm high x 225mm wide x 3.3mm deep.

The Japanese art of making paper stencils is known as Ise-katagami or Katagami.
