An 18th Century, Scottish, Christian Bible:
The Holy Bible, Containing the Old and New Testaments: Newly Translated out of the Original Tongues, and with the former Translations Diligently Compared and Revised. By His Majesty's Special Command. Appointed to be Read in Churches. Printed by Adrian Watkins, his Majesty's printer, Edinburgh, 1748.
The book runs from Genesis through to Psalm No. 11, so does not complete the Old Testament, and there is no New Testament. The book must have been bound as several volumes originally.
Overall, in fair condition. Cover is in full calf leather, with elaborate embossed, tooled design - the gilt long since largely rubbed away. With raised bands. Rear cover is almost detached - only bound by one remaining cord. Covers worn, rubbed and scuffed. The decorative free endpapers at either end of the book are no longer present.
Text block retains gilt edges, although dulled and dust toned. Title page is darkened, but legible. text pages are brighter, but with later coloured pencil and pen annotations.
An uncommon Scottish Bible variant.
