A substantial early 18th Century illustrated bible, attractively bound and with a scripted family provenance in the book. This is Vol. I only; Genesis to Job.

The Holy Bible, according to the authorized version; with notes, explanatory and practical; taken principally from the most eminent writers of the United Church of England and Ireland: together with appropriate introductions, tables, indexes, maps, and plans: prepared and arranged by the Rev. George D'Oyly B.D. and the Rev. Richard Mant D.D., domestick chaplains to His Grace The Lord Archbishop of Canterbury. Under the direction of the Society for Promoting Christian Knowledge. For the use of families. Vol I.

Printed for The Society at the Clarendon Press, Oxford, by Bensley, Cooke, and Collingwood, printers to the University. Sold by F.C. and J. Rivington, Booksellers to the Society, St. Paul's Churchyard (London), and by all other booksellers in the United Kingdom, 1817.

A very good full calf leather hardback, with marbled papers inset into gold lined panel, with blind tooled borders. Spine with raised bands and gilt tooled decoration and titles. Marbled endpapers with light cracking at inner hinge, but book is soundly bound. Covers scuffed, and wear and bumping to leather. 1cm leather hole worn through near tail of spine.

Small owner's label of William Austice to first pastedown. marbled endpapers are followed by 4 hand-scripted pages of family history, along with a further page at the rear, taking the history to 1915. The final entry marks the demise of a 2nd Lieutenant of the Royal Fusiliers who was killed in action at Gallipoli Peninsula on May 2nd, 1915, and later mentioned in despatches.

The text is very good throughout - a neat text block with occasional minor flaws such as creases, edge nicks, and some light scattered spotting and toning. But, overall, very neatly presented, with many attractive plates. A smart volume.
