Evelyn Waugh's The Holy Places is a short account of his journey through the Holy Land, combining observations on the sacred sites of Christianity with reflections upon pilgrimage, history and the preservation of the places associated with the life of Christ. Characteristically forthright and deeply informed by Waugh's Catholic faith, the essay considers both the spiritual significance of the sites and their sometimes incongruous modern surroundings. This handsome Queen Anne Press edition was produced in a limited edition of 950 numbered copies and is particularly notable for the fine wood engravings by Reynolds Stone, one of the foremost British wood engravers and lettering artists of the twentieth century.
