Combining historical events with romantic adventure, patriotism and tragedy, the novel follows Wallace's struggle against English domination, incorporating such figures as Robert the Bruce and Edward I. Although taking considerable liberties with historical fact, Porter's work enjoyed enormous popularity throughout the nineteenth century and became one of the most influential romantic portrayals of Wallace, helping to establish his enduring image as a heroic champion of Scottish liberty.
