The Sphere; An Illustrated Newspaper for the Home, Vol. I, Jan 27-June 30, 1900. A bound set of 6 months of The Sphere magazine in a typical library binding. This set running from the first ever issue.

The Sphere was a British illustrated newspaper issued weekly, which ran from 1900 to 1964. It was in direct competition with The Graphic and Illustrated London News.

The Sphere also contained high quality engravings, produced by renowned artists and featured accomplished writers. It was very much a publication of The British Empire, and the stories contained within focused on British interests at home and around the world. Launching in 1900, its early coverage is dominated by the Boer War, where they attempted to satisfy the public demand for images.

This first volume, also features the Boxer Uprising in China.

Issues of The Sphere are surprisingly uncommon, as so many have been completely pulled apart in order to sell individual images, so it is lovely to find a large run like this.

Published by The Sphere; An Illustrated Newspaper for the Home, London, 1900.

Large format hardback bindings with cloth covering. Covers are heavily worn - bumped and rubbed with the front cover completely detached, leather spine missing, and rear cover loose (which is not unusual for volumes of this weight). The first few pages are also detached and ragged. Inside, most of the text pages are actually very good. They are generally clean and in nice condition for a weekly of this age. There will be flaws - occasional page tears, foxing, stamp, creasing or loose page, but still a wonderful item to have.

Prelims + 740pp + some additional Supplementary pages.

Weight - A substantial Volume weighing approximately 8.5kg unpacked.

Dimensions - The volume is approximately 422mm high x 315mm wide x 70mm deep.
