"The Times" Atlas. Containing 117 Pages of Maps, and Comprising 173 Maps and an Alphabetic Index to 130,000 Names.

SOLD

Published at the Office of "The Times," London, 1st edition. The very first edition of the atlas which became so popular, with many following editions.

A very substantial late 19th Century atlas with an impressive collection of colour plates. A fair copy as the text block is loose in the binding. Covers have leather spine and corners with printed dark green cloth boards, with blind stamped motif. Covers are worn, scuffed and bumped with tear to leather at head of spine.

Marbled endpapers. The first free endpaper a bit nibbled. Title page has age spotting and damp stain to lower edge  of paper, and which can also be seen on the List of Maps. There are gaps to binding after some gatherings, but all still bound together.

Maps are generally very good and make for an attractive book. There is the occasional small tear or nibble to a few maps, but this is not common. Index section is clean and bright. Last endpapers with some foxing. Gilt text block edge.

An imperfect, but very interesting atlas - often found with binding issues due to weight of text block. The maps from this atlas are often sold individually.

iv + 117pp of colour maps (plus map title printed verso) + 188pp Index.

Dimensions: Approximately 422mm  x 300mm x 40mm - approximately 16.5" x 12" -  folio size.
