The work of W. W. Jacobs (1863–1943) occupies a distinctive place in late Victorian and early twentieth-century literature, combining humour, character-driven storytelling and occasional elements of the macabre. Best known for his classic tale The Monkey's Paw, Jacobs wrote extensively about everyday life along the Thames estuary and in London’s dockside communities, drawing on his experience in the civil service. His stories are noted for their economical style, sharp observation and memorable twists, ranging from light comic sketches of maritime life to darker, more unsettling narratives.
