Travels in Hindustan and China, 1840, by Howard Malcolm, rare

Published by William and Robert Chambers, Edinburgh, 1840

From the book:
"The present work, Travels in Hidustan, Malaya, Siam, and China, forms the second section of the author's 'Travels in South East Asia', published in 1839, in Boston, United States. It has been preceded by the first section, which comprehends the Burmah Empire. The present therefore completes the work.

"The author, Mr Malcom, as is stated in the preface to the first section, was engaged in the philanthropic object of exploring new fields of missionary enterprise in the East, to which he sailed from America in September 1835. After visiting Burmah, he left that empire, and taking shipping at Rangoon, arrived at Calcutta in Hindustan, in September 1836."

As stated above, the author recounts his travels not just in Hindustan and China as the title suggests, but also Malaya and Siam (Thailand).

This is a very scarce work.

The book has been rebound in modern cloth on boards in an attractive understated style. Covers are very good condition.

Text is good overall - slightly discolored through age and with spotting to end papers, but very acceptable for age overall. First original text page beginning to loosen at bottom edge of joint and has small 2cm tear. 94pp.
