Types of the British Army; Scots Guards, c. 1930

Types of the British Army; Scots Guards.

"The Scots Guards have been selected as the subject for the first of the series of Atholl Prints entitled "TYPES OF THE BRITISH ARMY." The portfolio contains eight coloured plates illustrating the uniforms worn at the present day on various occasions by the Officers, N.C.O.s, and Guardsmen. An interesting summary of the history of the Regiment since its inception in the reign of Charles I, is also included. The production is unique in that it is the first Art Publication completely produced from quarter plate negatives taken from life in natural colours with a specially designed camera in which colours are photographed simultaneously on different plates by means of colour separation filters."

This appears to be a scarce publication - only 2 copies listed on Worldcat, and no evidence of additional books in this series ever been printed.

Published by Stevenson, Clark & Co., Edinburgh and London. No Published date, but last plate in the book is dated to 1930 and it is likely that this is very close to the publication year.

Printed outer card wraps, frayed and nibbled to edges (the outer covers extend over the edge of the text and plates inside), with some spotting and staining. Bound to the plates inside with its original cloth binding ribbon - designed to be removable, so the plates can be framed if desired.

Inside is a loose leaf introductory page, followed by the title and introduction. Following are the eight coloured plates (all present as called for) with tissue guards. The title and introduction have some offsetting and page markings, with the plates themselves being in very good condition, with occasional light thumb mark to margins.

The final plate has a printed guide to the image on the opposite page.

Card covers + additional blank to front and rear + loose leaf introduction + Title + introduction + 8 tissue guarded plates.

Approximate dimensions: 411mm high x 320mm wide x 8mm deep (approx 16 inches high x 12.5 inches wide).

Weight approximately 526g.
