An original Second World War escape and evasion map issued for Allied use in the South East Asian theatre, printed in colour on rayon cloth (generally referred to as 'silk' but it is actually a semi-synthetic fibre made from regenerated cellulose from natural sources), in the practical double-sided format developed for wartime operational use. Designed for durability in difficult field conditions, cloth maps such as this were particularly suited to tropical environments, where conventional paper examples would quickly deteriorate through moisture and repeated handling.

This example comprises Sheet 44E and Sheet 44F, covering North Sumatra, western Siam (Thailand), parts of Malaya, and East Sumatra. Maps of this type were produced under wartime intelligence direction for Allied personnel, particularly aircrew and special operations, where compact, durable mapping could prove essential for navigation, escape, or evasion behind enemy lines. The underlying cartography for this series was based on the International Map of the World mapping programme, adapted for military requirements in the Far East.

Produced circa 1943-1944, these specialist fabric maps were manufactured using silk-screen style printing techniques, with British commercial printing expertise brought into wartime production.
