Lord of the Rings boxed set, plus The Hobbit in matching edition, Unwin Paperbacks, 1981
First published between 1937 and 1955, The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings together form J.R.R. Tolkien's monumental contribution to modern fantasy literature. The Hobbit introduces readers to Middle-earth through the adventures of Bilbo Baggins, whose discovery of the One Ring sets in motion the epic events of The Lord of the Rings trilogy. In that later work, Frodo Baggins and the Fellowship undertake a perilous quest to destroy the Ring and defeat the Dark Lord Sauron. Blending myth, language invention, and profound themes of friendship, sacrifice, and courage, Tolkien created a richly detailed world that redefined fantasy fiction and has inspired generations of readers and adaptations ever since.
