Meditations and Contemplations, by James Hervey, printed for J. Lackington, 1788
James Hervey’s Meditations and Contemplations is a popular 18th-century devotional work reflecting on nature, mortality, and divine creation. First published in the mid-1700s, the text is divided into two volumes: the first contains reflections inspired by graveyards, gardens, and the natural world; the second includes spiritual essays on night skies and winter scenes. Written in an elevated yet accessible style, the book aims to guide readers toward deeper religious thought through contemplation of the everyday and the eternal. This 1788 edition, printed for the notable London bookseller J. Lackington, brings together both volumes in a single binding.
