The Greville Memoirs; A Journal of the Reigns of King George IV, King William IV and Queen Victoria, 3 Parts in 8 Volumes, Charles C.F. Greville, 1875-1887
Charles Cavendish Fulke Greville (1794-1865), held the office of Clerk of the Council in Ordinary and served under the three monarchs of King George IV, King William IV and Queen Victoria. His diaries were published 10 years after his death to great interest in both Britain and America. His behind the scenes perspective caused both outrage and fascination, and his memoirs are now considered to have contributed greatly to our understanding of the times.
The set was published in 3 parts, which are all present here;
First Part: A Journal of the Reigns of King George IV, and King William IV, from 1817-1837, published 1875, 5th edition (3 Vols);
Second Part: A Journal of the Reign of Queen Victoria, from 1837-1852, published 1885, 1st edition (3 Vols); and
Third Part: A Journal of the Reign of Queen Victoria, from 1852-1860, published 1887, 1st edition (2 Vols).
Published by Longmans, Green, and Co., London, 1875-1887. Part I is a fifth edition and Parts II and III are first editions.
A good set overall. Blue cloth hardbacks, with gilt motifs to front covers and gilt titles to spine. Parts one and two have the remains of a label removal to the front cover, and on the inside front pastedown, a small bookplate from a 'John Forrester'. Covers with some signs of shelf wear, and bumping to corners and extremities. Some sun fading to spines and some age discoloration to covers. Some of the volumes with a little give in the spine, but all still bound.
The first 3 volumes of Part I are only fair to good - endpapers are split at inner hinges, and binding is much weaker.
With plain dark brown endpapers. Some spotting to free endpapers. With the occasional uncut page edge. Dust toned top edge of text block. Text is bright and clean throughout, with only the occasional minor flaw, making for a very readable set. Price commensurate to imperfect condition.
Text in English.
Weight approximately 6.3kg (the set - unpacked).
Dimensions:
Each volume typically 227mm high x 150mm wide x 25-40mm deep.
