An Introduction to the study of Chinese Painting, by Arthur Waley, 1st edition, Benn Brothers 1923.

Arthur Waley was an assistant in the British Museum. This volume is an excellent introduction to the subject and is a high quality publication.

1st edition. Published by Benn Brothers 1923, London.

Between 1922 and 1923 Benn Brothers published a number of important works on Chinese art, all in the same brown cloth binding. This website also has these 2 other editions on sale at the moment; R. L. Hobson's Wares of the Ming Dynasty (also available in extremely scarce leather and vellum versions) and A. L. Hetherington's Early Ceramic Wares of China. In addition we have a volume on English Pottery following the same book design.

Hardback, brown cloth binding with gold lettering to spine. Cover in very good condition. Binding is firm. A beautifully produced book with very attractive plates.

Text is in very good condition throughout. Text is printed on thick uncut handmade off-white paper which is very attractive and plates are on glossier white stock. Plates are tissue guarded. Text pages are very clean with some foxing to the first few pages at either end of the book. Some faint staining to the lower edge of some of the plates.

Not ex-library. Inside pastedown has bookplate of V. Meyer, carrying a red Chinese seal design.

Dustjacket is in poor condition with the spine completely missing, but it is actually the first time we have ever seen an original dustjacket at all with this volume.

xii + 262pp + plates. There are 50 high quality full page plates, tissue guarded, of which 6 are in colour.

Dimensions:
292mm high x 230mm wide x 45mm deep.
A heavy volume.
