Published by Seton & Mackenzie, Edinburgh. Presumed first edition from 1871 (date from the editor's Prefatory note at the beginning of the book.

A good red cloth hardback with gilt heraldic crest to cover and printed embossed decals. Cover bumped and lightly soiled. Slight give in the spine, but all soundly bound.

Plain yellow endpapers with some light spotting. Text is bright and clean throughout. With tissue guarded portrait frontispiece. No owner's marks. The steel engraved plates are of high quality. Full gilt edges to text block.

Illustrated with photographic plates. Contains frontispiece plate + 27 further sheets of plates (each of those double sided), so 55 full page plates in total, plus some additional illustrations.
