A paired set of two editions of Axel Munthe's celebrated memoir The Story of San Michele. The English edition, published by the Folio Society, presents Munthes evocative account of his life as a physician and his experiences building the famous villa of San Michele on the island of Capri, blending travel writing, personal reflection and encounters with many notable figures of his time. Accompanying it is an earlier French edition, Le Livre de San Michele, published in Paris by Albin Michel in 1935, reflecting the wide international success of Munthes work during the early twentieth century. Together these two volumes offer an attractive pairing that illustrates the enduring popularity of this classic memoir of life, medicine and Mediterranean culture.

The book was one of the biggest European literary bestsellers of the inter-war period.

Comprising:

The Story of San Michele, published by The Folio Society, London, 1993 (this is the second printing following their first edition of 1991). The first publication of this work was published by John Murray in 1929;

Le Livre de San Michele, published by Albin Michel, November 1935. They also published the first French edition in 1929.

The Folio Society printing (text in English) is in fine condition and appears to be unread. A brown cloth hardback with attractive gilt and black printed landscape to front cover and titles to spine. housed in a fine brown paper over board slipcase. Text bright, clean and soundly bound.

The Albin Michel edition (text in French) is rather worn and ragged, but all still bound and a very readable copy. Owner's signature to first free endpaper and small bookseller's stamp to inside front cover (Foyles of London). Some water stain marks to endpapers. Occasional marginal annotation and age toning.

An attractive pairing of English and French editions of this famous Capri memoir.
