Charles St John's Note Books, 1846–1853: Invererne, Nairn, Elgin, published in Edinburgh by David Douglas in 1901 and edited by Admiral H. C. St John, presents selections from the private field notes of the Scottish naturalist and sportsman Charles William George St. John. Written during the last years of his life in the north east of Scotland, the notebooks record observations of wildlife, landscape and rural life around Invererne, Nairn and Elgin. The entries describe the habits of birds and animals, local weather and sporting excursions, offering a vivid glimpse of nineteenth century Highland natural history. Published long after the author's death, the work complements St John's well known Wild Sports and Natural History of the Highlands and remains an appealing record of Scottish wildlife and countryside life.
