Early Cambridge King James Bible c.1629-1630 - Printed by Tho. and John Buck - Disbound but complete
THE HOLY BIBLE CONTAINING THE OLD TESTAMENT AND THE NEW:
Newly translated out of the originall Tongues, and with the former translations diligently compared and revised, by his Majesties speciall command.
Appointed to be read in Churches.
Printed by Tho. and John Buck, printers to the University of Cambridge.
An important early seventeenth century Cambridge King James Bible, printed by Tho. and John Buck, printers to the University of Cambridge. The volume comprises the complete Old Testament, the Books called Apocrypha, and the New Testament, all present and correctly ordered.
The Old Testament general title page bears the Buck Cambridge imprint but is undated, which is typical of Buck era Old Testaments. The New Testament title page is dated Anno Domini 1630. On bibliographical grounds, and consistent with known Buck Cambridge Bible issues, the Old Testament is generally attributed to circa 1629, although no date appears on its title page.
The volume includes the engraved Old Testament general title page and the printed New Testament title page, followed by the full biblical text and Apocrypha.
Numerous contemporary or near contemporary manuscript additions are present throughout, including extended genealogical tables recording births, marriages and deaths, as well as marginal and full page notes, calculations and annotations. These manuscript additions add considerable historical and genealogical interest and indicate long and sustained family use.
The inside front cover carries a later facsimile of the 1535 Coverdale Bible title page, pasted down. This is a later historical insertion and is not part of the original seventeenth century printing.
The Bible is entirely disbound, with the text in loose sections, but complete and in correct order. Original, heavily worn, boards with period marbled paper are present but detached, with worn leather corners and heavy edge wear.
Paper shows age toning, handling wear with some old paper repairs, edge losses and occasional staining consistent with age and use. The engraved and printed title pages remain clear and legible.
This Bible represents a complete but unrestored early Bible, suitable for rebinding, conservation, scholarly study or collection, as a significant example of early Cambridge Bible printing.
