Alan Orr Anderson's Early Sources of Scottish History A.D. 500 to 1286 remains one of the most important scholarly compilations for the study of medieval Scotland. First published in 1922, this monumental work brings together and translates the principal narrative and documentary sources relating to Scotland from the early medieval period up to the death of Alexander III. Covering chronicles, annals, charters, saints' lives, and foreign accounts, Anderson's work provides researchers with a comprehensive, critically edited resource that shaped much of 20th-century scholarship on Scottish history.

More than just a translation, the set includes detailed notes and commentary which identify variant readings, discuss historical context, and cross-reference parallel accounts from Irish, English, Welsh, and continental sources. The result is an invaluable reference that continues to serve as a cornerstone for historians of early and high medieval Scotland, from the era of Columba and the Picts to the emergence of a unified Scottish kingdom.
