This is a well-preserved 1726 third edition of Volume I of Gravesande’s influential introduction to Newtonian physics. Though titled “Vol. I,” this volume is complete in itself, containing two parts of Book I and three parts of Book II, and includes all 33 fold-out plates as called for.

Mathematical Elements of Natural Philosophy, Confirm'd by Experiments; Or, An Introduction to Sir Isaac Newton's Philosophy, Vol. I. Written in Latin, by William-James Gravesande. Translated into English, by J.T. Defaguliers.

Printed for J. Senex, W. and J. Innys;  and J. Osborn and T. Longman, London. The Third edition, 1726.

A very good hardback bound in full contemporary calf. With original panelled decoration, raised bands to spine with tan morocco label with gilt titles. Small library reference sticker near tail of spine. Covers with some wear, rubbing and bumping, and a small loss of leather to top right front cover, but overall in very good shape for an 18th Century binding. Soundly bound. Endpapers with previous owner's name 'Anthony Murray'.

Text is bright and clean throughout with scattered worm holes and noticeable worm trails in places, and occasional minor flaws. Despite these age-related issues, the overall appearance is of a very attractive book - the copious fold-out plates are of very good quality - collated, and all as called for.

A complete and desirable example of an important early work in popularising Newton’s natural philosophy.

Text in English.
