A charming early 19th-century edition of William Hayley’s once-popular didactic poem, finely illustrated and attractively bound. The Triumphs of Temper, first published in 1781, became one of the most frequently reprinted English poems of the late Georgian period. A moral tale in verse, the work promotes the virtues of good humour and emotional moderation, especially among women, reflecting Enlightenment ideals of reason and domestic virtue. Hayley, a poet, biographer, and friend of William Blake and William Cowper, saw this poem become his most enduring success.
