Burmese lacquerware offering vessel, known as hsun ok, 19th Century lacquer. Large size: Approx. 67.5cm high. 31.5cm diameter.

This beautiful lacquerware vessel made in bamboo and lacquer is constructed in 2 main parts, opening to reveal a red coloured compartment. Beautiful proportions.

The beautiful shape resembles a pagoda. Intricate detailed decoration on the collar of the lacquerware, probably featuring mythical figures, with a floral 'thayo' pattern. This is combined with the elegant unadorned body. The style infers the origin of Pagan.

Traditionally such vessels are used to present food to a monastery, but make a wonderful, timeless, decorative piece.

These are not often found in the UK.

Condition is very good overall. Structurally sound and no splits. Some wear to the red colour creating a slight, and pleasing, negoro effect in places. Some general small signs of wear and tear, and minor marks, commensurate with age. One old repair to the neck area of the upper pillar, as is often the case. The underside carries the original incised craftsman's marks in Burmese.

An attractive and scarce piece.
