Unique Handmade Manuscript Craft Techniques Teaching Book - for educating children, Victorian era.

We would love to know the full story behind this book, but alas know no details at all, other than the pictures convey...it is clearly a labour of love with every page produced by hand, with many examples of craft techniques mounted into the book including paper folding, paper cutting, pattern making and embroidery, amongst others.

It appears to be a teacher's guide illustrating craft techniques for children. 

A truly unique and special book. Sourced in Scotland. The labels used to title each section are printed in Liverpool on labels from Philip Son & Nephew, South Castle Street, Liverpool. We believe this firm was established under this name in 1859. From general appearance, we would date the book at circa 1880-1890, but it is undated.

The book's format is to generally have a handwritten script introduction to each section, which are entitled 'Books'. Each 'book' covers a different technique with handmade craft examples included.

The sections comprise:

1. Paper Cutting and Mounting - 42 Patterns.

2. Paper Cutting and Mounting - 37 Patterns.

3. Paper Mounting.

4. Stick Laying.

5. Intertwining.

6. Mat Weaving 1.

7. Mat Weaving 2.

8. Drawing 1.

9. Drawing 2.

10. Paper-folding 1.

11. Paper-folding 2.

12. Embroidery (and Perforating).

There are a great many examples of the techniques throughout the book (the Paper-folding sections contain more than 120 pasted in examples alone).

Covers are considerably worn. There are leather corners and spine with buckram cloth. Covers are split at hinges - attached, but fragile. Edges are worn, bumped, and with small losses. Cloth is ragged and soiled. There was once a title label on the front, but only the position of the pastedown now remains. 

Inners joints cracked, with drawings in pencil to first free endpaper. The text pages are age toned but in good condition throughout. There are occasional flaws such as occasional small tear to page edge, a detached craft example, occasional fold and soiling to page edges and edge of text block.

Despite any flaws, this book is a very special one-of-a-kind manuscript book offering  fascinating insight into the dedication of a teacher from Victorian times.
