A Sketch of a Tour on the Continent by James Edward Smith is an engaging early nineteenth-century travel account, first published in 1793 and presented here in its expanded second edition of 1807. Based on Smith’s journeys through France, Switzerland, Italy and the Low Countries, the work combines personal observation with scientific and cultural commentary, reflecting the author’s interests as both a traveller and a naturalist. Written in an accessible and often lively style, it offers a valuable snapshot of European life, landscapes and intellectual culture in the years following the Enlightenment, and stands as a notable example of British travel writing of the period.
