Tobias George Smollett (1721-1771) was a highly influential Scots writer, as well as a qualified surgeon.
Published Mundell & Son, Edinburgh, 1800. Second edition, enlarged. An uncommon version of Smollett's works - both the first and second edition sets are scarce.
A good set of 5 hardback volumes in full mottled calf leather with an attractive striped patination. Covers with gold dentelles and gilt stamped spine. Blue marbled endpapers with a matching brown marbling to text block edges. Covers with some wear and bumping and a little frayed to head and tail of spine.
Text pages are clean and bright throughout, but with minor flaws. Some occasional worm holes and some light marginal staining. Occasional foxed marks. Vol VI with previous owner's signature in pencil to free endpaper. A very readable set, despite the missing volume.
Each volume approximately 212mm high x 140mm wide x 32-37mm deep.
Text in English.
