For the Flag (original French title: Face au drapeau, 1896) is one of Verne's later novels and part of his Extraordinary Voyages series. The story follows Thomas Roch, a brilliant but mentally unstable inventor who develops a powerful new weapon. After being rejected by his home country, he falls into the hands of pirates who hope to exploit his invention for their own ends. Much of the narrative unfolds from the perspective of Simon Hart, a government agent undercover among the pirates. The book blends elements of political intrigue, ethical tension, and technological anxiety – highlighting Verne’s evolving interest in the darker implications of scientific progress.
