Hag-Seed by Margaret Atwood is a modern retelling of Shakespeare’s The Tempest, part of the Hogarth Shakespeare Project. Set in a performing arts prison program, the story follows Felix Phillips, a fired artistic director who seeks revenge on colleagues who humiliated him years earlier. Under the alias “Prospero,” he uses the inmate-actors in a theatrical production of The Tempest to orchestrate his plan—and to find personal healing.

Structured in nine acts, the novel weaves together themes of revenge, forgiveness, and the transformative power of art. Felix’s journey mirrors Prospero’s arc: from bitterness to redemption. Along the way, he mentors Anne-Marie, a young prison supervisor, and bonds with inmates who bring fresh, raw perspectives to Shakespeare’s characters. With witty dialogue and poignant insight, Atwood explores the restorative impact of storytelling while honoring the spirit of the original play.
