This two-volume historical work by Thomas Arnold offers a detailed account of the political and military development of Rome during its transition from Republic to Empire. The first volume traces events from the conclusion of the Second Punic War through the turbulent final years of the Roman Republic, culminating in the death of Julius Caesar. The second volume continues with a study of the reign of Augustus, Rome’s first emperor, and concludes with a biographical sketch of Emperor Trajan, regarded as one of Rome’s most capable and just rulers.

Thomas Arnold (1795–1842), headmaster of Rugby School and a noted historian and moralist, brought a scholarly and moral perspective to his classical histories. His approach combined narrative history with reflections on governance, civic duty, and character – values central to Victorian educational ideals.
