Published by Cassell & Company, Limited, London, Paris, New York & Melbourne. Undated, but c. 1880-1890. Subscriber's edition. Bound in 6 Divisions, in original Publisher's cloth hardback bindings - a set more commonly found bound as 3 larger volumes.
A good set. The red cloth covers are decorated with gilt, red and black printed decoration and blind stamped details. With titles to spines. Covers with some bumping, rubbing and occasional marks and soiling. Spines a little faded. With plain black endpapers as issued - some strained at hinge. Inner hinges are generally quite weak (due to binding technique), but holding. Cracked to gutter after the plates at the front of each book.
Each book begins with 10 finely detailed engraved plates on thicker paper stock than the main text to follow. Plates with some light scattered spotting. Text is generally bright and clean throughout. All Plates are present as called for - 10 per volume, plus copious illustrations throughout.
With shiny gilt edges to text block. An impressively illustrated set of books.
