Charles Kingsley (1819-1875), was an English professor, writer, clergyman, social reformer, historian and poet. He was one of first to embrace Charles Darwin's Origin of Species, and was the writer of classics such as The Water Babies and Westward Ho! The latter led to the founding of a village of the same name, and remains the only English lace name with an exclamation mark in its name!

Published by Kegan Paul, Trench & Co., London, 1884. The first edition of this work was published in two volumes in 1876, and was later condensed to this single volume edition.

A good hardback with red leather spine and corners. Raised bands, tooled gilt decoration and black morocco label to spine. Marbled paper over boards. Covers are scuffed, bumped and worn to outer hinges and edge of boards. Matching feathered marble endpapers and matching design to text block edges, slightly dust toned to top edge. First free endpaper with scuff mark.

The text is clean and bright throughout with just occasional light spotting.With portrait frontispiece with tissue guard (with some spotting to guard). Frontispiece with facsimile signature.
