I Cover the Waterfront by Max Miller is a vivid and engaging account of life along the San Diego waterfront, first published in 1932. Drawing on Miller's experience as a reporter, the book brings together a series of sketches and anecdotes capturing the characters, routines and atmosphere of the harbour, from fishermen and sailors to drifters and dockworkers. Written in a direct and conversational style, it offers an authentic glimpse of working waterfront life in early twentieth-century America. The work later formed the basis of the 1933 film I Cover the Waterfront, starring Claudette Colbert.
