A substantial and well-regarded eight-volume historical series tracing the development of Europe from the fall of the Roman Empire to the end of the nineteenth century. Periods of European History, edited by Arthur Hassall, brought together leading historians of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries to produce a coherent, scholarly overview intended for serious students and general readers alike. Each volume covers a defined chronological period and is supported by maps and tables, many in colour and in folding format. Issued by Rivingtons in sturdy cloth bindings, the series became a standard reference work and remains a useful and readable survey of European political and social history.
