W.S. Gilbert (1836-1911), famed as the librettist of the Gilbert & Sullivan operas, was also a sharp-witted comic poet and illustrator. The Bab Ballads, first appearing in the 1860s, showcase his playful verse and caricature drawings, many of which later inspired characters and situations in the Savoy operas. This edition brings together the complete Bab Ballads with Songs of a Savoyard, illustrated throughout with over 350 of Gilbert’s own humorous sketches.
