A good set of black cloth hardbacks with gilt title to spine. Covers with some bumping and wear to extremities and some scuffing to boards. No dustjackets. Text is clean with some age toning. The bindings have a little give in it at the spine - quite common with these books, which were still being produced "in complete accordance with the authorized economy standards" designed to reduce expenditure post-war. 

Volumes I, II and IV have cracked hinge to webbing at or near the title page. Other volumes are intact. Red tinted top edge of text block, now a bit faded. Previous owner's name and date (contemporary with publication date) to endpaper in 1st volume.

Dimensions: Each volume approximately 217mm high x 146mm wide x 40mm deep.
