A handsome late‑Victorian edition of The Works of Alfred Tennyson, attractively bound in green leather with raised bands and gilt titling, complemented by marbled boards, endpapers, and text‑block edges. This copy carries evocative provenance: it was purchased in Bombay in 1885 to read “The Defence of Lucknow” amid the ruins of the Residency, as recorded in the inscription of former owner L. Duff Dunbar (L.D.D.), and includes a tipped‑in envelope with 1936 Times clippings on the Union Jack flying over the Lucknow Residency. Together, the volume not only represents Tennyson’s enduring literary stature but also embodies a tangible link to the British colonial experience in India and the memory of the 1857 Siege of Lucknow.

"This book was bought in Bombay in 1885 in order to read 'The Defence of Lucknow' in the ruins of the Residency. p.622"...L.D.D. (L. Duff Dunbar - previous owner's inscription). On the opposite page is a tipped in envelope carrying three 1936 newspaper clippings from The Times regarding the flying of the Union Jack over the Lucknow Residency.
