Verdi 2001; Atti del Convegno internazionale; Proceedings of the International Conference; Parma, New York, New Haven, 24 January - 1 February 2001.
Edited by Fabrizio Della Seta, Roberta Montemorra Marvin, Marco Marica.
(Historiae Musicae Cultores, XCIV, directed by Lorenzo Bianconi.)

A very smart two-volume scholarly set of proceedings from the international Verdi centenary conference, held in Parma, New York and New Haven in early 2001. The collection gathers nearly sixty contributions from leading musicologists, covering source studies, performance and staging practice, cultural history, and reflections on the ongoing critical edition of Verdi’s works. Vol. I contains contributions mainly in Italian, Vol. II mainly in English, with continuous pagination across both volumes. Widely cited in later Verdi scholarship.

Giuseppe Verdi (1813-1901) was the leading Italian opera composer of the 19th century and a central figure in European music. Born near Parma, he rose from modest beginnings to achieve international fame with works such as Rigoletto, Il trovatore, La traviata, Aida, Otello and Falstaff
