Memoirs and Portraits of One Hundred Glasgow Men, who have died during the last thirty years, and in their lives did much to make the city what it now is. No author stated, but in the Publisher's preface they pay tribute to Messrs. Maclure & Macdonald, who presumably compiled the work.

Published by James Maclehose and Sons, Glasgow, publishers to the University. 1886 first edition. A limited edition of just four hundred copies for sale. The limitation page in the first volume states that this is No. 6. The steel engravings of the portraits featured in this books were commissioned specifically for this work.

A good set of these 2 very substantial hardbacks. Each has a red leather spine with gilt title to spine and gold motif to front cover. Covers with green cloth over boards. Covers scuffed and bumped and leather well worn to extremities.

Volume one has split endpapers at inner joints and rear cover is almost detached (and will detach soon). Volume 2 also has split endpapers and rear cover attachment is weak, although still bound.

Bookplate of James Campbell of Tullichewan (who was a Member of Parliament for the Universities of Glasgow and Aberdeen, and is noted in the List of Subscribers). This is the son of James Campbell (1790-1876) who is featured in the book.

The text is very good - generally clean and bright with occasional mild spotting and small marks, but a very nice reading copy overall. volume I has some more pronounced spotting on the last few pages.
