Sketches of the Character, Manners and Present State of the Highlanders of Scotland: With Details of The Military Service of the Highland Regiments, by Colonel David Stewart. 2 Volume set complete.

Published by Archibald Constable & Co, Edinburgh; Longman, Hurst, Rees, Orme, and Brown; and Hurst, Robinson, and Co. London. 1822, first edition set.

A good set of hardbacks with leather spine and corners and marbled boards. Spine with raised bands and red morocco titles labels with gilt. Leather is worn and bumped, and boards are scuffed, but binding is sound. Bookplate of Duncan Alastair Campbell as well as previous owner's inscriptions, which relate to the descendents of Sir James R Grant, who was Chief of Clan Grant, and even the more modern inscription of Mackenzie, relates to the descendants of the Scottish author Harry Mackenzie who married into the family.

The original text within is good - endpapers and pages at extremities have some age spotting, but the majority of the text is clean, with occasional minor spotting.

What is particularly nice is that the book retains the original linen backed fold-out "Map of the Highlands of Scotland denoting the Districts or Countries Inhabited by the Highland Clans", which is fixed facing the title page of Volume I. The map is in very good clean condition, with no tears, and the colours are still bright. This is often found lacking in this set.

Text in English.

Vol. I: Fold-out Map + xiii + iv + 536pp.

Vol. II: viii + 445pp + xcviii Appendix + fold-out table.

Weight: approximately 1607g (unpacked weight).

Dimensions:

Each volume approximately 221mm tall x 145mm wide x 32-36mm deep.
