The Complaint; or, Night-Thoughts on Life, Death, and Immortality. To Which are added, Some Thoughts on the late Rebellion and a Paraphrase on Part of the Book of Job. By Edward Young (uncredited).

Young was an english poet (1683-1765), and this was his best known work, generally known simply as 'Night-Thoughts'. The book comprises a series of philosophical writings, which after several bereavements, reflected his state of mind. The work is written in blank verse, and was very popular in its day.

A good full contemporary calf leather hardback. Covers worn and rubbed, and hinges strengthened internally via old cloth repair. With raised bands, and no title label remaining to spine.

Text is good with occasional damp staining to margins, and scattered spotting and minor imperfections, including one marginal corner loss p. 46 not affecting text. but overall a nice readable copy with text still bright and clear. With a splendid engraved frontispiece with Death appearing during the night, pointing out 'Vanity' to the anxious onlooker.
