Heroes and Gentlemen; An Army Chaplain's Experiences in South Africa, Rev. Robert M'Clelland, 1902
Published at the close of the Second Boer War, Heroes and Gentlemen (1902) records the front-line impressions of the Rev. Robert M’Clelland, Presbyterian chaplain to the Highland Brigade and the 1st Battalion, Queen’s Own Cameron Highlanders. Writing from encampments and field hospitals across South Africa, M’Clelland blends vivid anecdote with pastoral reflection, portraying ordinary soldiers—“heroes” for their endurance and “gentlemen” for their comradeship—against the backdrop of guerrilla skirmishes, typhoid wards, and long columns on the veld. Part travel diary, part morale tract, the book offers a rare Scottish chaplain’s view of imperial warfare just as the conflict ended, making it a valuable contemporaneous account for Boer-War and Highland-regiment collectors alike.
