The History of Scotland, Translated from the Latin of George Buchanan, James Aikman, 1827, 6 Volumes

A substantial and complete six-volume 1827 English translation of George Buchanan’s celebrated History of Scotland, by James Aikman – long regarded as one of the most important early modern histories of the Scottish nation. Issued in two parts in the same year and here uniformly bound, this scarce set combines Buchanan’s humanist Latin text with Aikman’s extensive notes and continuations, carrying the narrative through to the post-Union period. An impressive and scholarly set, increasingly difficult to find complete.

Six volumes, 1827, comprising the complete English translation by James Aikman, issued in two parts (Vols. I–IV and Vols. V–VI), printed by different printers but published in the same year, and uniformly bound. This is normal for this scarce set.

A good plus set (and scarce to find all 6 volumes). This hardback set is bound uniformly, with tan leather spines and corners. With blind stamped decoration to spine and morocco leather title labels with gilt. Some volumes missing title labels. Leather with some wear and bumping and rubbed to joints, but all soundly bound. With marbled paper over boards. 

Text is clean and bright throughout with occasional light scattered age spotting. Some spotting to endpapers. Marbled edges to text block.
