Jonathan Swift, Gulliver's Travels, Teerink AA edition, 1726.

SOLD

This book is clearly a very early edition of this classic work. This is the second volume of Travels into several Remote Nations of the World In Four Parts By Lemuel Gulliver, First a Surgeon, and then a Captain of several Ships (Gulliver's Travels), consisting of Parts 3 and 4 of the novel.

Bound in full contemporary panelled calf with raised bands to spine, with a faint number 2 embossed to the third spine panel down. Covers are attached but loosening and have substantial wear (see photographs).

Title pages are absent, making exact edition identification very difficult, but this appears to be the Teerink AA edition from November 1726, published by Benjamin Motte. The 2nd edition of this book.

Part III, p.74: correctly numbered as p.74.
Part III, p. 94: Seventh chapter misnumbered as Chap. V.
Part IV, p. 52: ‘but his’ and not ‘buth is’.
Part III, p. 11: ‘ngu-lar’ not ‘singular’.
Part III, p. 80: ‘re-received’.
Part III, p.89: ‘strick’.
Part IV, p.10: ‘Wondet’.
Part III, p.89: ‘tinture’.

I am happy to supply any additional photos required for further identification. Undoubtedly a scarce find.

The book opens with an inscribed page to the first free endpaper, followed by 4 contents pages. Then there is "Plate III, Part III, Page 1" Map and the Travels, Part 3 title. 154pp then 6pp Contents then "Plate VI, Part III, Page 1" Map and Part IV title. 199pp to finis, then further signature to rear pastedown.

Other plates included are "Plate IIII, Part III" map of Balnibarbi and "Plate V, Part III, Page 74", the table from the School of Language.

Text is good overall - clear but age discoloured.
