A Treatise on the Venereal Disease; Being Chiefly Designed as a Translation and Abridgement of the Practical Work of Dr. Astruc's Work, Samuel Chapman, London, 1770
A smart copy of this 18th century medical text by Dr Samuel Chapman. The Royal College of Physicians notes: "Samuel Chapman, M.D., was a native of Oxford, and a doctor of medicine of Aberdeen of 20th February, 1763. He was admitted a Licentiate of the College of Physicians 1st April, 1765."
A Treatise on the Venereal Disease; Being Chiefly Designed as a Translation and Abridgement of the Practical Work of Dr. Astruc's Work. To which are added, The Improvements with regard to the use of the Sasaparilla, Mezereon, and Sublimate; As Also An Account of Mr. Plene's Method of Cure. By Samuel Chapman, M.D. of The Royal College of Physicians, London.
Printed for 658, between the Temple-Gates, Fleet Street, London, 1770. The Second Edition; A much expanded, and updated development of his first edition of 1755, translating De Morbis Veneris Libri Sex, by Jean Astruc (1684-1766), French professor of medicine who wrote the first major work on syphilis and venereal diseases.
A very good full brown calf leather hardback, with raised bands, and gilt titles. The original contemporary boards have been re-backed and a new calf spine added. Original covers scuffed and worn, but professionally restored, and all soundly bound.
Text is very good throughout, with some occasional light scattered spotting, but a very smart copy indeed, of an uncommon medical text.
