Amadeus, by Peter Shaffer. 1980 first edition. From the library of Theatre Director, Alan Strachan.

An interesting association copy of Peter Shaffer’s celebrated play, dramatising the rivalry between Mozart and the court composer Antonio Salieri. Combining dark humour with an exploration of genius, jealousy and faith, it presents Salieri’s struggle to reconcile Mozart’s extraordinary musical gifts with his irreverent personality. This copy comes from the personal library of the distinguished theatre director, writer and biographer Alan Strachan (1944-2025), acquired directly from his former home in Invergowrie, although it does not bear his ownership signature.
